Brazil Moves to Strengthen Crypto Fraud Enforcement with Harsher Penalties
Brazil's Chamber of Deputies is advancing legislation to incorporate cryptocurrency into its anti-fraud framework. A key committee has approved a bill allowing judges to freeze suspects' crypto assets and impose prison sentences of up to 10 years for digital fraud.
The proposed law, Bill 5819/2025, escalates penalties for fraud committed via social media, email, or other electronic channels, raising the sentencing range from four-to-eight years to six-to-10 years. Fines will also apply.
Judges would gain expanded authority to block access to bank accounts, crypto wallets, real estate, and digital payment systems as preventive measures. The bill must clear additional legislative hurdles before becoming law.
